Can England pick up a series-winning 2nd Test victory against Sri Lanka, or will the Lions bite back this Wednesday? Joe Root must have breathed a sigh of relief after England’s gallop in Galle. Storming to victory by a 211 run margin, the result marketed the side’s first away win in 13 games, and the only international triumph of Root’s captaincy. It was notable for more than just that, however. Eventual man of the match Ben Foakes made a superb Test debut as he secured a century, becoming only the 20th English batsman to do so. He now goes into Wednesday’s Test at a Player Super Mega Runs spread of 68-76, admittedly the lowest of a batch of prices that includes Ben Stokes at 91-101, Keaton Jennings and Rory Burns (who also made his debut last week) at 94-104, and Captain Root at 128-138. For Sri Panka, meanwhile, Angelo Matthews – who scored 52 in the first innings and 53 in the second – is at a Player Super Mega Runs spread of 94-104, a price matched by Dimuth Karunaratne, with Kusal Mendis then at 91-101. As for the outcome of this week’s trip to Kandy, England’s dominant showing in the 1st Test leaves them, understandably, as favourites for the 2nd, at a 25:10 spread of 13.4-14.9 to the hosts’ 9-10.5. They are also obviously heavily fancied to take the series as a whole: England sit at a binary spread of 73.3-80 to Sri Lanka’s 6.7-11.8, and are odds on at 1/4.
