Can Wolves stretch their legs at the top of the Championship with a win over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night? Despite having the best attack in the league, with 41 goals in 21 games, Wolves just couldn’t break down a relegation-battling Sunderland on Saturday. Instead they came away with a 0-0 draw, ending what had been a 6 game winning streak. Luckily for Nuno Espirito Santo’s lot, 2nd place Cardiff then went and drew with Reading, preserving a 4 point lead at the top of the table. The deficit between them and 3rd place Bristol is even greater, an 8 point-wide moat that means Wolves will likely wander back into the Premier League for the first time in 6 years next season. Hopefully Leo Bonatini will still be with them. The Brazilian forward is on loan from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal and is not only Wolves’ top scorer with 12 goals, but joint 2nd in the Championship as a whole, 2 goals behind Sheffield United’s Leon Clarke. As for Sheffield Wednesday, their season’s neither here nor there. In 15th place the Owls are 11 points above 22nd place Birmingham, but 10 off of their United rivals in 6th. They haven’t won a game since the start of November. Not that they’ve really been on a losing run either. Wednesday’s last 5 games have seen 0-0 stalemates against Bristol and Reading, 2-2 draws against Ipswich and Hull, and on Saturday a 3-1 defeat to Norwich. It captures the complete meh-ness of the last few months that they have a goal difference of exactly 0, with 26 goals scored and the same amount conceded. One of the few above-average aspects of their season has been Gary Hooper, who has 10 goals in the Championship and 1 in the League Cup and likely stands as Wednesday’s best chance of besting their visitors. The Owls may have to wait a bit longer for a win, with Spreadex offering a Wolves/Sheffield Wednesday (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 0.25-0.45 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.4-2.6.
