With the 2nd round about to get underway, will Michael van Gerwen be able to continue his journey to a 4th consecutive Grand Slam of Darts title? While Mighty Mike is easily the favourite for the 2018 tournament – he sits at an Outright Index spread of 30.5-33.5, and its odds on at 5/6 – he hasn’t been quite as infallible this season as he has in previous years. Now, in terms of major titles, he has still picked up The Masters, the Premier League and the World Grand Prix. Yet he stumbled in the semis of the PDC World Championship and the Champions League of Darts, while suffering shock 1st and 3rd round exits in the World Matchplay and UK Open. He also had a bit of trouble in the Grand Slam group stages, surprisingly finishing behind Jonny Clayton – ranked no. 17 on the PDC Order of Merit to van Gerwen’s no. 1 – after losing to the Welshman in his 2nd match of the tournament. That sets up a 2nd round tie with beaten Premier League finalist Michael Smith on Thursday, with Spreadex offering a van Gerwen/Smith 10-3 Supremacy spread of 13.5-16.5. A distant second to van Gerwen on the Outright Index is Gary Anderson, the World Matchplay, UK Open and Champions League champ at a spread of 22-25 and fixed odds price of 10/3. He faces Wesley Harms on Thursday, and sits at sizeable a 10-3 Supremacy spread of 20-23. Next up is Peter Wright, the 2nd seed heading into the competition, at 15.5-18.5, followed by European Championship winner James Wade at 11.5-14.5, Mensur Suljovic at 10.5-13.5 and PDC World Darts Championship victor Rob Cross at 10-13. That final pair feature in what could be the tightest fixture of the round, with Cross just about having the advantage at a 10-3 Supremacy spread of 0-3.
