Step up to the oche if you dare, it’s time for the PDC World Championship, which starts this Thursday evening! According to both Spreadex’s Outright Index (where the winner gets 60 points, the runner-up 40, the losing semi-finalists 20, etc.) and its fixed odds prices there is one man who is far and away the favourite to take the 2017 world title: Michael van Gerwen. Mighty Mike, ranked no. 1 in the world, has had quite the 2016. This year he has won *breathe* The Masters, the UK Open, the Premier League, the World Matchplay, the World Grand Prix, the European Championship and the Players Championship Finals. That’s an improvement on his spectacular 2015 and one that leaves him with an Outright Index spread of 42.5-45.5 and fixed odds of 4/7 as he attempts to take his second ever World Championship. The man rival to van Gerwen appears to be Gary Anderson who, at a spread of 23-26 alongside fixed odds of 5/1, is looking to defend his title for the 3rd year in a row. While there have been a lot of semi-final finishes for the Scot this year (and a silver medal at the World Grand Prix), no-one has been better at the competition in recent years than Anderson and he will be aiming for an upset come January. Though he has relinquished the title of world’s greatest dartsman to van Gerwen, Phil Taylor has actually beaten the Dutch upstart 3 times in a row, including at the inaugural Champions League of Darts. It’s a sign that one can never discount Taylor, with the Power heading into the World Championship (a competition he has won a staggering 14 times) at an Outright Index spread of 17-20 with fixed odds of 6/1. That’s the same Outright Index spread as Peter Wright, who is behind Taylor with a fixed odds price of 11/1. Rounding out the top 6 are David Chisnall, at a spread of 8.5-11.5 and fixed odds of 28/1, and James Wade, at 8-11 and 40/1.
