Will Leeds or Derby be joining Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final on May 27th? Frank Lampard has had a fantastic inaugural season as Rams manager – and football manager full stop. And it wouldn’t quite be fair to define it by whether or not Derby reach the Premier League for the first time since 2008. Yet after last year’s crushing play-off semi-final defeat at the hands of Fulham – who have boomeranged straight back to the Championship – the club will be desperate to at least reach Wembley this time out.
Sadly, things didn’t go their way in the 1st leg. In what gradually became a more and more testy tie as the fixture went on – there were 7 yellow cards shown in the 2nd half, while the Rams had a penalty decision overturned with 14 minutes to go – Kemar Roofe’s 55th minute opener was the difference maker, leaving Derby to travel to Elland Road needing a win. Leeds, to be far, will feel like a spot in the 2019/20 Premier League – and at the very least a place at Wembley in a couple of weeks’ time – is their right. The club actually spent 33 out of 46 weeks in the top 2, only for 3 losses and a draw in their final 4 games – and, just as importantly, a 1-0 defeat at home to eventual runners-up Sheffield United in mid-March – to force them into the play-offs. The Whites will be without top scorer Roofe, the forward out with a calf injury. That leaves Patrick Bamford at a Super Mega PGM of 50-58, with Pablo Hernandez then at 19-23. In contrast, Derby have Harry Wilson at 17-21 and Martyn Waghorn at 13-17. Already 3 times this season Marcelo Bielsa’s side have beaten their visitors, last weekend’s play-off victory preceded by 4-1 and 2-0 wins in the Championship proper. They’ll be looking to made it 4 out of 4 on Wednesday, with Spreadex offering a Leeds/Derby Goal Supremacy spread of 0.75-0.95, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.7-2.9 and a Bookings spread of 56-60.
