Sports Blog 16/12/2014: Match Preview – Derby vs Chelsea, Tuesday 16th December

The Rams have spent much of the season at the top of the Championship; a loss in their last game against Middlesbrough saw them fall to third, one point behind Boro and Bournemouth. Despite this slip, they still remain favourites in the battle for automatic promotion, and have been in fine form, averaging 2.2 home goals per game, with 23 home goals in their last 10 games.

These stats will cause some worry for Chelsea, who would do well not to underestimate their lower-league opponents. Mourinho has said as much, emphatically claiming that he will not risk leaving the cup by fielding a weakened team. This comes as Chelsea face an unenviable string of games over the next three weeks, including visits to Southampton and Tottenham.

Chelsea Busy Christmas And New Year

Regardless, Chelsea are sitting pretty atop the Premier League, 3 points ahead of Manchester City, and having won 4 games in the last 6, alongside a loss at Newcastle and a draw against Sunderland. Derby are in similar form, with 4 wins and 2 losses; however, their most recent game was the aforementioned loss to Middlesbrough, leaving Chelsea slightly more favourable on paper.

Both teams have found no difficulty in finding the net this season, with Derby’s top scorer being Chris Martin, on 14 goals in all competitions; Chelsea’s Brazilian born, Spanish national Diego Costa is top for them, on 12 goals, and Spreadex’s favourite to score first at 7/2 fixed odds betting.

Despite his excellent strike rate, Martin is only 15/2 to score first, with Derby’s Johnny Russell at 14/1 with 6 goals to his name, and Jeff Hendrick’s at 18/1 with 5 goals. Chelsea legend Dider Drogba, who scored in the Blues’ last League Cup game against Shrewsbury, is at 7/2 on 6 goals, with Eden Hazard at 5/1 with 8 goals.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given their league domination, Chelsea have been favourites at Spreadex with a Goal Supremacy spread betting quote of Chelsea/Derby (h) 1.1-1.3. And in light of Derby’s home scoring record, Spreadex have a healthy Total Goals spread betting quote of 2.85-3.05. Whilst the League Cup is a relatively minor competition for Chelsea, Mourinho is the kind of manager that doesn’t think in those terms; Derby, on the other hand, will be looking for an upset, one they are more than capable of given their form this season. With this in mind, all the stats are pointing to an exciting quarter final encounter.
