Will this week’s Open Championship provide the same level of surprise as the other PGA majors have in 2017? Like the Masters back in April, June’s US Open threw up another shock victor, with Brooks Koepka winning his first ever major title at Erin Hills. That Koepka still sits outside the PGA top 10 – he is 11th – captures just how astonishing his win was. The 27-year old’s chances of picking up a second major at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club look pretty slim, with Spreadex offering a Leaderboard Index spread of 4-6 (where the winner gets 80 points, the runner-up 40, 3rd place 30 etc.) alongside a fixed odds price of 33/1. So, who does exactly sit atop the Leaderboard Index? That honour goes to world no. 1 Dustin Johnson, despite the fact that the American hasn’t won a tour tournament since the end of March. He heads to Southport with a spread of 10-13, with a fixed odds price of 14/1. Just behind Johnson are Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and Masters champion Sergio Garcia, all 3 men entering the competition at a Leaderboard Index spread of 9-12. Spieth is still a long way from its remarkable 2015 but still has a fixed odds price of 14/1, the same as Garcia; Fowler, who tied for runner-up 3 years ago, is at 16/1. Relative bambino Jon Rahm – he’s just 22-years old – is up next, with the same 16/1 fixed odds price as Garcia but a slightly less perky Leaderboard Index spread of 8-11. That places him in front of Rory McIlroy, who, despite having past form at the Open Championship, is at just 7-9 (and a fixed odds price of 18/1) after failing to make the half-way cut in Wisconsin back in June. Moving further down the list and there’s Hideki Matsuyama and Henrik Stenson. The former finished in joint 2nd place at the US Open, while the latter was last year’s surprise Open Championship champion; both golfers have a Leaderboard Index spread of 6-8, with fixed odds prices of 22/1 and 25/1 respectively.
