The first weekend of the Premier League was full of shocks – will week 2 be quite as exciting? First up, can Swansea hold-off a swaggering Manchester United, at 12.30pm on Sky Sports? Though a 0-0 draw against Southampton isn’t anything to sniff at, one imagines Swans fans were disappointed that the club’s winning end to 2016/17 didn’t carry over to the start of the new season. Paul Clement’s side sorely missed the Everton-bound Gylfi Sigurdsson and injured Fernando Llorente, the latter of whom will once again be absent this weekend, only creating 4 chances against the Saints. In contrast, United’s opening game against West Ham read as a statement of intent. Arguably the most impressive performance of the weekend, Mourinho’s men smashed the hammers 4-0, with a brace from Romelu Lukaku – who has a Super Mega PGM of 55-63 – and goals from Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba. Saturday’s fixture gives the visitors plenty of chance to ramp up their momentum, with Spreadex offering a Man United/Swansea (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 1.4-1.6 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.6-2.8. Later on will Arsenal avoid a classic Stoke-stumble when they visit the Potters at 5.30pm on BT Sport 1? The Gunners had an electrifying, if troublesome, Friday fixture against Leicester, twice having to come from behind in their 4-3 victory. That they fought back – not always a given with Arsenal – is commendable; the fact they repeatedly had to isn’t. While Wenger yet again has some defensive headaches to deal with, at least Alexandre Lacazette made his mark, scoring his first Premier League goal within 2 minutes – the Frenchman goes into Saturday’s game at a Super Mega PGM of 41-48. As for Stoke, their opening weekend ended in disappointment, with Everton’s returning prodigal son Wayne Rooney giving the Toffees a 1-0 win. Mark Hughes could really do with Saido Berahino – yet to score since signing from West Brom in January but still at a Super Mega PGM of 14-18 – finding his form if Stoke are to spring a surprise their visitors. That looks unlikely, however, with Spreadex offering an Arsenal/Stoke (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 0.6-0.8 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.65-2.85. Turning to Sunday and Huddersfield will want to continue their fantastic start to Premier League life when they face Newcastle at 1.30pm on Sky Sports. It’s safe to say that no-one expected the Terriers – surprise Championship play-off winners and top of Spreadex’s Relegation Index at 12-15 – to burst out of the gate with a 3-0 away win over Crystal Palace. Huddersfield suffered no top flight teething problems, with club record summer signing Steve Mounie – who nabbed a brace, and sits at a Super Mega PGM of 24-29 – especially impressive. Championship winners Newcastle had a less successful start to their Premier League return, a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham compounded by an early 2nd half red card for Jonjo Shelvey. Last season the honours were split between the two sides; Huddersfield beat the Toon in their second match back in the Championship, only for Rafa Benitez’s men to win 3-1 in March. The hosts have the advantage this time round, at a Huddersfield/Newcastle Goal Supremacy spread of 0-0.5-0.25 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.3-2.5. Finally, in easily the biggest game of the (admittedly embryonic) season so far, last season’s runners-up Tottenham host defending champions Chelsea at 4pm on Sky Sports. The Blues were thoroughly embarrassed last Saturday; they lost 3-2 at home to Burnley – and at one point were down 3-0 – with both Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas being sent off in the process. Worryingly it conjured unpleasant memories of 2015/16 abysmal title defence, especially since it followed their Charity Shield loss the weekend before. Still the only Premier League side yet to sign a player this summer, Tottenham breezed through Sunday’s trip to Newcastle with goals from Dele Alli – who sits at a Super Mega PGM of 18-22 – and Ben Davies. Now they just need to end their ‘Wembley curse’. They had a string of nightmares at the home of England football last year, including a woeful run in the Champions League, a round of 32 exit in the Europa League and an FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea. Yet this Sunday could well see that all change, with Spreadex offering a Tottenham/Chelsea Goal Supremacy spread of 0.3-0.5 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.55-2.75.
