England’s Women’s Euros 2017 tournament kicks off with a doozy of derby with Scotland, at 7.45pm on Eurosport 2. Since the first official event back in 1984 – then called the European Competition for Women’s Football – Germany have dominated, winning 8 out of the 11 titles, including 7 out of 8 under the UEFA banner, and the last 6 tournaments in a row. It should come as no surprise, then, that Die Nationalelf are favourites for a 9th victory, at an Outright Index spread of 27-30 alongside a fixed odds price of 2/1. Yet England aren’t too far behind. Beaten finalists in 2009, and with a typically English unbeaten run in qualifying – 7 wins and a draw – the Lionesses have an Outright Index spread of 21.5-24.5 (France sit between them and Germany at 24.5-27.5) and a fixed odds price of 5/1. They’re also favourites to top Group D, at an Index spread of 16.5-18, to Spain’s 15-15.5, Scotland’s 4-5.5 and Portugal’s 1.25-2.75. As you can probably tell from their Group Index spread, Scotland aren’t much fancied, heading to the Netherlands with a pitiful Outright Index spread of 1-2.5. That won’t mean a jot to the Scots when they pour out onto the pitch at the Stadion Galgenwaard, aiming to upset their English foes. Like England they had a strong qualifying campaign, finishing in 2nd place behind Iceland but on the same 21 points (their only loss came at home against the Icelanders). That made them the top-ranked 2nd place side, sending them straight through to the tournament proper without the faff of a play-off. Despite the intensity of the occasion Mark Sampson’s side likely won’t be too worried about their opening fixture, with Spreadex offering an England/Scotland Goal Supremacy spread of 1.8-2 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.7-2.9.
