Group C comes to a close on Tuesday, with Italy already through to the knockouts, and Brazil, Australia and Jamaica all striving to join them. Italy vs Brazil, 8pm on BBC FourBefore the tournament began, Brazil had been on a truly miserable run of form. Between their stylish Copa America Femenina triumph in April 2018 – 7 straight victories and 31 goals, marking a 7th title in 8 editions of the competition – and their opener against Jamaican in Grenoble, Vadao’s women had won just once in 11 games.
It was a relief, then, that they saw off the Reggae Girlz with ease, a 3-0 win courtesy of Cristiane’s hat-trick. They looked set to continue their strong start in their 2nd game against Australia, with a converted penalty from Marta and another goal for Cristiane giving them a 2-0 lead before the 40 minute mark. Yet Caitlin Foord brought the Aussies back into it with what might as well have been the final kick of the 1st half, planting a seed of doubt heading into the break. That doubt blossomed in the 2nd half, with an equaliser from Chloe Logarzo and an own-goal Monica giving the Matildas a big win. As for Italy, they’ve been something of a surprise. They haven’t even appeared in the World Cup since 1999, and only once have escaped the group stages. And now they’re already in the last-16, with a very late win over Australia and a confident 5-0 thrashing of Jamaica meaning even if they lose on Tuesday they could still top the group. Le Azzure’s luck may run out in Valenciennes, however, with Spreadex offering a Brazil/Italy Goal Supremacy spread of 0.1-0.3, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.75-2.95. Jamaica vs Australia, 8pm on BBCiWhile it would only take a draw for Australia to confirm their spot in the last-16, they do stand a chance of taking 2nd place – and therefore an ostensibly easier fixture in the next round – if they win big against Jamaica. And that’s eminently doable. So far Hue Menzies’s side have conceded 8 goals in 2 games without responded once, meaning the Aussies could be in for a sizeable boost to their goal difference, as shown in an Australia/Jamaica Goal Supremacy spread of 3.8-4 and a Total Goals spread of 4.4-4.7.
