Can Middlesbrough sneak into the Championship top 2 with a win at Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night? It’s all very tight at the top of the Championship. Only 6 points separate Sheffield United in 1st place and their Wednesday counterparts in 6th, with Boro somewhere in the middle, in 4th place on 22 points. After failing at the play-off point last season, Middlesbrough are having another go at promotion – though, ideally, this time they will go straight to the Premier League, rather than take the longer route. So far they’ve won 6, drawn 4 and lost 2, their most recent result being a 2-0 defeat at home to fellow top 6ers Nottingham. Yet even with that slip-up they still have the tightest defence in the entire Championship, letting in just 6 goals in 12 games. Combine that with a healthy 22 goals scored and their goal difference is only bested by West Brom. Propping up the bottom end of the play-off zone, Wednesday appears to be in far better shape than they were last season. While they got off to a very poor start, with 2 losses and a draw in their first 3 games, since then they’ve only lost once. They are, however, very leaky at the back, their 18 goals conceded the highest tally out of anyone in the Championship’s top 13. The long international break may have taken the sting out of the visitors’ start of October defeat to Forrest, with Spreadex offering a Middlesbrough/Sheffield Wednesday (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 0.2-0.4 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.3-2.5.
