Sports Blog 19/04/2016: Premier League Preview – Newcastle vs Manchester City, Tuesday 19th April 2016

A hard fought 3-0 win over Swansea on Saturday, the first of the embryonic Rafa Benitez era, combined with Norwich’s defeat to Sunderland (admittedly not the best result for the Toon) leaves Newcastle 2 points behind the Black Cats and 3 behind the Canaries (with a game in hand over the latter).

It gives the Tyne-side the slimmest of slim chances to escape the drop; yet standing in their way is not only their own incompetence, but a fairly tough run in. Tonight’s game against City is followed by a trip to Anfield to face a mid-revival Liverpool, a potentially tricky tie against Crystal Palace, an eminently winnable trip to Aston Villa and the imposing prospect of a final day game against Tottenham.

Whilst Newcastle battle the odds to battle the drop Manchester City have a renewed push for 3rd place and, more importantly, a first-ever Champions League semi-final to look forward to. Unbeaten in 5 games (4 wins and that 1st leg draw against PSG), most recently besting Chelsea at Stamford Bridge thanks to a Sergio Aguero hat-trick (the Argentine ace heading into Tuesday night at Super Mega PGM of 62-72) City have seen a late in the day resurgence in what was looking like a pretty dismal season.

It is one thing for the Toon Army to beat Swansea; it is another challenge altogether to ask them stop the buoyant Sky Blues, Benitez’s side needing a minor miracle. At least that is what our Spreadex traders seem to think, offering a Manchester City/Newcastle Goal Supremacy spread of 1-1.2 with a Total Goals spread of 2.95-3.15.
