Can Germany claw back a scrap of dignity, or will the Netherlands secure a place in the Nations League finals, in Group 1’s closing game at 8.45pm on Sky Sports Football? Once the dominant force in international football, Joachim Low’s side have utterly collapsed in 2018. What many pegged to be a successful defence of their World Cup title in Russia turned into a group stage exit farce, the 2014 winners shockingly finishing behind Sweden, Mexico and South Korea, managing only 2 goals across their 3 games. Onwards to the Nations League, and though dealt a tough group with the recently crowned world champs France and the Netherlands, the competition provided Germany with a potential reset. That wasn’t to be the case, however. A 0-0 draw with Didier Deschamps’ French fancies in Munich was a solid enough start. Yet they were outclassed in Amsterdam, with the Netherlands – who, remember, didn’t even reach Russia – picking up a 3-0 victory. An early lead at the Stade de France was then erased by an Antoine Griezmann brace, a result that left Germany relegated to League B with one game left to play. As for Monday’s Dutch visitors, they could be on track for a Nations League coup. Going into the competition they would have been favourites for the chop, even with Germany’s World Cup flop factored in. However, they were only narrowly beaten 2-1 in France, and beat them 2-0 in Amsterdam, meaning a draw at the Veltins-Arena would be enough to send them to the finals thanks to a superior head-to-head goal-scoring record. Despite everything said above, it feels unnatural to count the hosts out, with Spreadex offering a Germany/Netherlands Goal Supremacy spread of 0.45-0.65, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.85-3.05.
