Match Preview - Sri Lanka v England 3rd ODI, Wednesday 3rd December

With the Cricket World Cup on the horizon, various quarters are calling for the resignation of Cook, with both his captaincy of the team in general, alongside his own form, being called into question.

As well as his indifferent totals with the bat in this form of the game (Cook has only hit one England ODI half-century in his last 18 innings and averages under 25 from his last 10 matches), it’s also his slow run rate that has been highlighted by many as hindering England’s progress.

For the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka, Spreadex had Cook’s opening Batsman Runs spreads at 34-38 and 35-39 respectively, however he only managed 10 and 22 in each case.

Cook Last 10 ODI Scores

This was the sour icing on a bitter cake as Sri Lanka opened up a 2-0 series lead. Whilst the first game was relatively close fought due to Moheen Ali’s blistering 119, a defeat of 8 wickets in the second has caused the black cloud of doubt over the captain to grow substantially.

England haven’t won a ODI series since March, and this current run of losses is the last thing Cook et al would be hoping for as preparation for the World Cup. Indeed England have been on the drift to 12/1 in terms of the outright World Cup winner betting. Whilst the blame cannot lie solely at Cook’s feet, many are wondering if he is the best man to lead England in to battle next February.

Based on these recent results, it is unsurprising that here at Spreadex we have seen plenty of spread bets from clients getting with Sri Lankan Supremacy at a spread of Sri Lanka/England 15-25. We also offer player runs in-play when the match starts, and based on activity from the first two ODIs we wouldn’t be surprised to see more customers shorting Cook’s runs when the action begins.
