Sports Blog 20/07/2016: UEFA Champions League 2nd Qualifying Round 2nd Leg Preview – Celtic vs Lincoln Red Imps, Wednesday 20th July 2016

Kicking off his career as Celtic manage in the most inauspicious way possible, Brendan Rodgers’ first competitive game in charge of the Hoops, a Champions League qualifier against Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps, ended in a shocking 1-0 defeat thanks to an early 2nd half goal from Lee Casciaro (whose day job is as a Ministry of Defence policeman). It was such a laughable outcome that it recalls England’s Euro exit to Iceland in not only the shock of the result but the respective size and stature of the teams (both Iceland and Lincoln involving a healthy dose of semi-professionalism).

Rodgers insisted that there was ‘no embarrassment’ over the defeat, and that it was merely a ‘bolt of lightning’ for the side. Once can’t help but think, however, that Rodgers has already piled the pressure upon himself, and failure to qualify for the Champions League will leave a massive stain on his first season in charge before the Scottish Premiership has even begun. To right last week’s wrong Rodgers will want more from summer signing Moussa Dembele, who joined from Fulham for half a mil, as well as Leigh Griffiths, who showed little of his 40 goal-form from last season in the 1st leg.

As for Lincoln Red Imps, winners of the Gibraltar Premier Division last season (and every season since 2002/03), already they have matched 2015/16’s achievement of reaching the 2nd round of Champions League qualifying, where they lost to FC Midtjylland (who, remember, beat Man United) 3-0 on aggregate. In the 1st round of this year’s competition Lincoln beat FC Flora Tallinn 3-2 over 2 legs, before the club achieved their arguable all-time peak with that win over Celtic.

Sadly our Spreadex traders aren’t predicting a fairy-tale ending for the Gibraltarians, offering a hefty Celtic/Lincoln Red Imps Goal Supremacy spread of 3.5-3.7 alongside a Total Goals spread of 4.05-4.35.
