Sports Blog 21/04/2016: Premier League Preview – Arsenal vs West Brom, Thursday 21st April 2016

A 3-3 draw with West Ham, who are still in the running for a spot in Europe following their comprehensive victory over Watford yesterday evening, is somewhat forgivable. A 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace, a team, remember, that has won 1 Premier League game since the New Year began, is not. It’s the latest in a long line of Arsenal-capitulations, the Gunners once again having to satisfy themselves with the bare-bones achievement of qualifying for the Champions League. Manchester City’s slip-up against Newcastle (of all sides) means Arsenal can leapfrog their rivals with a win on Thursday evening whilst having little to no impact on the actual title race, a thoroughly unexciting prospect that reflects the relative meaninglessness nature of tonight’s tie.

If Arsenal can at least soothe their wounded pride with a win, then what is in it for West Brom? Well, despite being victory-less since the start of April (most recently losing to 1-0 at home to Watford), the Baggies can still edge near a top-half finish if they manage to take all 3 points at the Emirates. Currently in 14th place on 40 points, with Everton, Watford and Bournemouth sitting above them on 41 points having played 1 game less, West Brom could jump to 11th with a surprise win over Arsenal, knocking on the door of Chelsea in 10th place.

It’s hard to muster much enthusiasm for tonight’s game. However, our Spreadex traders, at least, think there should be a few goals, with Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck all at strong Super Mega PGM spreads of 61-71, 51-59 and 40-47 respectively. The Gunners should also be fairly confident in a home win, Spreadex offering an Arsenal/West Brom Goal Supremacy spread of 1.8-2 with a Total Goals spread of 3-3.2.
