Surviving their toughest Bundesliga title defence since they last lost the league back in 2010/11, can Bayern Munich cap off another successful season with a DFB-Pokal victory over RB Leipzig this Saturday? It wasn’t until the start of April that Bayern took back control of the Bundesliga, permanently wresting the top spot from Borussia Dortmund with a 5-0 reassertion of their dominance over Lucien Favre’s side. That marked the club’s 7th title in a row, though a campaign that was paired with their worst showing in the Champions League since 2011.
Interestingly Bayern’s progress to Saturday’s DFB-Pokal final was pretty sloppy. They only got past SV Drochtersen/Assel thanks to an 82nd goal from Robert Lewandowski – who has 38 goals total in all competitions – while they squeaked past SV Rodinghausen 201. They then needed extra time to get past Hertha Berlin in the last-16; needed an 84th minute penalty to beat 1. FC Heidenheim 5-4; and required another 80th minute penalty to knock out Werder Bremen in the semis. Though they may have finished 22 points adrift of Bayern in 3rd place, RB Leipzig looked slightly more confident in the cup. The only real wobble came in the quarter-finals, where they were forced to extra time by an injury time equaliser from Augsburg’s Alfreo Finnbogason. Elsewhere they beat Viktoria Koln, 1899 Hoffenheim, Wolfsburg and Hamburger SV. Leipzig are one of the sides that have fared better against Bayern this season. In their first meeting back in December the Bundesliga champs only won 1-0, while less than a fortnight ago their pair ground out a goalless draw. That past resilience might not mean much on Saturday, however, with Spreadex offering a Bayern Munich/RB Leipzig Goal Supremacy spread of 1.05-1.25, alongside a Toal Goals spread of 3.05-3.25.
