Can either Aston Villa or Brentford jump to the top of the Championship with a victory on Wednesday, at 7.45pm on Sky Sports Football? Attempting to return to the Premier League on the third time of asking – with 2016/17’s mid-table culture shock followed by last season’s play-off final heartbreak against a 10-man Fulham – Steve Bruce’s side have gotten off to a solid start. Things kicked-off with an intention-marking result over Hull, Villa bouncing back from a 7th minute opener from last season’s top flight relegatees to win 3-1. Their follow-up at home to Wigan was a bit hairier, the Villains requiring a 94th minute goal from Birkir Bjarnason to secure a 3-2 victory. They slowed down at the weekend, however, held to a 1-1 draw in Ipswich despite their hosts playing with 10 men for the entire 2nd half. Yet that match did see Jonathan Kodjia pick up his first goal of the season, with the Ivory Coast forward heading into Wednesday night at a Super Mega PGM spread of 32-38. While they have the same 7 points as Villa, Brentford have arguably been more impressive. Their curtain raiser saw the Bees hammer Rotherham 5-1, the Millers flattered by a 92nd consolation goal. They followed that up with a respectable draw against former Premier Leaguers Stoke, before beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at Griffin Park. Last season’s top scorer Neal Maupay has impressed early on, with a brace against Rotherham and a strike against Wednesday leaving the French 22-year old at a Super Mega PGM of 28-33. He has stiff competition from Ollie Watkins, however; he has scored in all 3 of the Brentford’s Championship fixtures so far, and sits at a spread of 19-23. A win by a 2 goal deficit or more would allow the Bees to leapfrog Leeds and claim first place, while it’d take Villa 5 clear goals to do the same. It is going to be tight, with Spreadex offering an Aston Villa/Brentford Goal Supremacy spread of 0.05-0.25 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.6-2.8.
