With some of the sports’ biggest names set to step onto the court, the rest of the Australian Open semi-finalists will be decided on Wednesday. Over on the Women’s side of the draw, Serena Williams is looking to continue to storm her way through the tournament when she takes on Karolina Pliskova. Brief wobble in her 2nd set against Simona Halep aside, the all-time great has looked unstoppable.
Chasing her first Grand Slam title since she was victorious in Australia back in 2017, she now sits at a competition-best fixed odds price of 6/4, and an Outright Index spread of 33.5-36.5, trailing only Petra Kvitova, who is already in the semis, at 41.5-43.5. Clearly, then, she is expected to triumph over her Czech opponent, at a Williams/Pliskova Match Supremacy spread of 7-10. The first of Wednesday’s quarters actually sees Naomi Osaka – who beat Williams in last year’s controversial US Open final – go up against Elina Svitolina. Looking to build on her debut Grand Slam win last September, Osaka is just about the favourite, at a Match Supremacy spread of 1.5-4.5. As for the men, world no. 1 Novak Djokovic, who leads the Outright Index with a spread of 42.5-45.5 to Rafa Nadal’s 42-44, continues his competition against Kei Nishikori. The Serbian star has been broadly unruffled, beating Mitchell Krueger and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets, before moving past Denis Shapovalov and Daniil Medvedev in the 3rd and 4th rounds respectively. His Japanese rival hasn’t had quite as smooth a journey. So far Nishikori has been forced to 5 sets in 3 of his 4 matches, pushed to his limits by Kamil Majchrzak, Ivo Karlovic and Pablo Carreno Busta; only against Joao Sousa was he able to progress with any degree of comfort, besting the Portuguese player in 3 sets. That doesn’t bode well for Wednesday, with Spreadex offering a Djokovic/Nishikori Match Supremacy spread of 15.5-18.5. Before that, however, Milos Raonic faces Lucas Pouille. Raonic has had the tougher draw, going through Nick Kyrgios, Stan Wawrinka, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Alexander Zverev on route to the quarter-finals. Pouille’s biggest win, meanwhile, came in the 4th round as he beat 11th seed Borna Coric in 4 sets. The Canadian is fancied on Wednesday, with Spreadex offering a Raonic/Pouille Match Supremacy spread of 13-16.
