Can anyone challenge Lewis Hamilton’s Formula One dominance as we head into the 2018 season-opener in Australia? With Nico Rosberg retired and Sebastian Vettel losing his way in the second half of 2017, there doesn’t seem to be any to really shake Hamilton’s Grand Prix-grip. It’s no surprise, then, that the Brit has quite a substantial lead atop Spreadex’s 2018 Drivers’ Championship Outright Index, and is chasing a 5th title at a spread of 44-47, where the winner gets 60 points, runner-up 40, 3rd place 30 etc., etc. If Hamilton were to be victorious come the end of November that would leave him as the joint second most successful driver in F1 history, equal to Juan Manuel Fangio but 2 championships behind Michael Schumacher. In comparison Vettel, who was so dominant in the first half of the decade, is at just 29-32, and has a fixed odds price of 4/1 to Hamilton’s 8/13. But it is worth noting that the German has been on a broadly upward trend since 2014, creeping from that season’s 5th place finish to the runner-up spot last year. Perhaps the wild card is wunderkind Max Verstappen. At a Drivers’ Championship Index spread of 27-30, and a fixed odds price of 7/1, he isn’t a world away from Vettel. Last season saw him pick up 2 Grand Prix victories, in Malaysia and Mexico, a tally surpassed only by Valtteri Bottas (who’s at 18-21), Vettel and Hamilton. Plus he’s 3 years younger than when Vettel and Hamilton won their first championships! As for the Constructors’ Championship, Hamilton’s Mercedes are obviously the Index leaders with a spread of 38-41. Interestingly next up is Red Bull, home of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo, at a spread of 30-33, ahead of Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari at 24-27. In terms of the Australian Grand Prix itself, all the usual faces are found at the top of Spreadex’s Race Index. Hamilton, who hasn’t actually won in Oz since 2015, is at 63-68, with last year’s victor Vettel at 53-58, Verstappen at 48-52 and Bottas at 41-45.
