Is Kell Brook in for a bumpy return to the welterweight division when he faces Errol Spence Jr on Saturday night? The Special One bit off more than he could chew back in September 2016. Jumping up not one, but two weight categories, Brook took on middleweight maestro Gennady Golovkin for the WBC, IBF and IBO titles. Yet things didn’t go to plan at the O2 Arena; Brook’s trainer Dominic Ingle threw in the towel in the 5th round, with the British fighter suffering a fractured eye socket. That defeat was the first professional loss of Brook’s career. Yet he has claimed that ‘for all the negatives that came from it, they all turned into positives’, a theory that will be tested when he comes up against his American opponent in Sheffield. Spence has won all 21 of his professional bouts, 18 of which finishing by knockout. Saturday’s fight will easily be the biggest of his career, as it marks the first time the 27-year old has competed for a belt. Despite being on home turf, it appears there are doubts about how successful Brook’s welterweight comeback will be. Spreadex are offering a Spence/Brook 10-3 Supremacy spread of 4-7, where the winner receives 10 points plus a further 3 points for every round remaining in the fight (including the current one). Spence also wins out on the 50-25-10 spreads – where 50 points are awarded for a win by KO, TKO or disqualification, 25 for a points win and 10 for a draw – at 23-26 to Brook’s 13.5-16. As the binary markets, which make up to 100, Spence is at 54.5-62 to win the fight compared to the title holder’s 34.7-41.7. The American is also odds on favourite at 8/13 to Brook’s 7/5. Elsewhere, Spreadex has a Fight Minutes spread of 26.5-28, with 4/6 fixed odds for the bout lasting over, and 11/10 for under, 10.5 rounds.
