It’s just over a week away until the 2016 Ryder Cup with Europe aiming for a 4th consecutive victory, a run that would be the best since the competition opened up to include not just Great Britain and Ireland but the continent as a whole. In terms of major championships this year the 2 sides are evenly split; Team Europe has Masters winner Danny Willett and Open Championship victor Henrik Stenson, while Team USA has PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker and US Open champion Dustin Johnson. And they aren’t even the team’s big hitters. No, that honour falls arguably falls to Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth respectively. While neither has had the best year of their careers, they are still the most dangerous names attached to each team. Beyond the green there has also been some mild hubbub about Davis Love III’s choices for his 4 vice-captains, namely the selection of Tiger Woods. Europe’s Lee Westwood has been especially vocal about the decision, claiming that he thinks Woods’ presence will have an ‘adverse effect in the [US] team room’. Despite being victorious for the past 3 tournaments Europe are still the underdogs when they head to Minnesota next Friday. Spreadex have the USA as odds on favourites at a fixed price of 4/7 to Europe’s 15/8 with a tie, something that hasn’t happened since 1989, at 10/1. Love III’s team are also fancied at a USA/Europe 10-3 Match Supremacy spread of 7-10, alongside a Points Supremacy spread of 1.5-2.1.
