Sports Blog 23/03/2016: International Friendly Preview – Germany vs England, Saturday 23rd March 2016

With Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart and Raheem Sterling injured, Roy Hodgson has ample reason to experiment this weekend, and for once that should be approached with celebration instead of trepidation. With Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy netting 21 and 19 Premier League goals respectively, Hodgson gets to play both of the league’s top scorers, a feat achievable for an English manager for the first time since Kevin Phillips and Alan Shearer took the top 2 spots back in 1999/2000.

Germany England Match Spreads March 23rd

In midfield this season has seen the emergence of Delle Alli for Tottenham, Danny Drinkwater for Leicester and the continued strength of Ross Barkley for Everton in midfield. In defence, meanwhile, Spurs pop up once again with Danny Rose and Kyle Walker, whilst Manchester United’s Chris Smalling has started in more clean sheets than any other outfield player this season. Even in goal things look promising, despite the absence of Hart, Jack Butland’s 103 saves for Stoke more than any other keeper in the league.

However whilst England’s squad may be full of promise, Joachim Loew’s German side are already the full package. Topping the Group of Death by edging out Poland Germany didn’t have the easiest qualifying campaign; yet they remain favourites for the competition proper, at 3/1 to England’s 9/1. In terms of Saturday, Loew has arguably the best goalkeeper in the world in the form of Manuel Nuer, Borussia Dortmund’s Mat Hummels in defence, a cavalcade of talent in midfield including Andre Schurrle, Sami Khedira, Toni Kroos, Mesut Ozil, Marco Reus and Mario Gotze, with Thomas Muller, who has 28 goals for Bayern Munich this season, up front.

And it might be that gulf in experience that gives Roy Hodgson’s side a short sharp shock on Saturday; our Spreadex traders suspect so, at least, offering a Germany/England Goal Supremacy spread of 0.8-1 with a Total Goals spread of 2.5-2.7.
