Can England inflate their World Cup expectations with a win in the Netherlands, at 7.45pm on ITV? Though they are unbeaten since last June, when they lost a friendly in Paris against a 10-man France, England’s most recent string of results doesn’t exactly scream world-beaters. A 4-0 victory in Malta sounds far more exciting than it actually was, with the subsequent wins against Slovakia (2-1), Slovenia (1-0) and Lithuania (1-0) more reflective of where the side is at under Gareth Southgate. That they didn’t concede in a pair of Wembley friendlies against Germany and Brazil back in November is something of an achievement, but even that it was arguably undermined by the teams put out by both World Cup favourites. March’s friendlies, then, will give Southgate another much-needed chance to try and prove that his England side have more about them than many think. Of course, Harry Kane’s injury perhaps blunts the likelihood of that happening, but still. Jamie Vardy, who has a respectable 17 goals tally for Leicester this season, is at a Super Mega PGM spread of 28-34, while Marcus Rashford is at 19-23 and Danny Welbeck is at 16-20. As for the Netherlands, Friday’s game is an opportunity for the Orange Army to find a bit of catharsis after a difficult, disappointing and World Cup-denying qualification campaign. Ronald Koeman’s men have actually won their last 5 fixtures on the trot, and in far more style than England, though it is a concern that a third of the 12 goals scored during that time were bagged by the now-retired Arjen Robben. It’s time for Bas Dost, who has a remarkable 57 goals in 56 games for Sporting Lisbon but only 1 in 15 international, to step up, with the forward at a Super Mega PGM of 19-23. It’s hard to separate the two sides, both arguably shadows of their former selves, with Spreadex offering a choice Netherlands/England Goal Supremacy spread of -0.1-0.1 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.25-2.45.
