Can Newcastle secure a place in the Premier League with a win over Preston, at 7.45pm on Sky Sports 1? Having spent all but 4 weeks at the top of the Championship table between mid-October and the start of April, Rafa Benitez will feel a bit gutted that Newcastle have made such a mess of their run-in. They have won just 2 of their last 8 games, losing 3 and drawing 3, allowing Brighton to leapfrog the Toon and confirm their automatic promotion. Nevertheless, with Reading and Huddersfield losing at the weekend, if Newcastle can nab all 3 points at St James’ Park this evening they will find themselves back into the top flight on the first time of asking. The Toon remain without top scorer Dwight Gayle – whose absence perhaps helps explains the club's recent dip in form – leaving Matt Ritchie as the club’s most consistent attacking force with 15 goals in all competitions. He heads into Monday night at a Super Mega PGM of 31-37, behind Daryl Murphy at 39-46 and Aleksander Mitrovic at 44-51. Stranded in 11th place, unable to break into the play-off zone but safe from relegation, Preston’s season doesn’t have much left to offer. That is unless than can further disrupt Newcastle’s return to the Premier League, as some kind of payback for the humiliation they suffered at the hands of Rafa Benitez and co. in October last year. That is because the two sides have already met twice this season. The first saw Newcastle put 6 past a 10 man Preston in the EFL Cup, before picking up a 2-1 away win just 4 days later. Despite the hosts’ current troubles the Lilywhites shouldn’t pose too much of an issue, especially with so much on the line, Spreadex offering a Newcastle/Preston Goal Supremacy spread of 1.4-1.6 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.95-3.15.
