After years of trashing-talking preamble the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr finally faces UFC legend Conor McGregor in what might well be the biggest fight of all time this Saturday (or painfully early on Sunday morning if you’re in the UK). All signs point to McGregor getting battered in Las Vegas. Whichever market you look at it, rather heavily, suggests Mayweather will come out of the fight at 50-0. For example, Spreadex have the American at a Mayweather/McGregor 10-3 spread – where the winner gets 10 points plus a further 3 for every round remaining (including the current one) – of 13.5-16.5, alongside a Mayweather 50-25-10 spread of 34-37 to McGregor’s 6.5-9.5. Things become even starker for the Irishman when you look at the binary spreads and fixed odds prices. Mayweather is at 77.7-85.8 to win the fight (where the spread makes up to 100) compared to McGregor’s 13.3-20, while the 5 time boxing world-champion is odds on favourite at 1/6 to the Notorious One’s 4/1. As for the specifics of the result, again McGregor is facing an uphill battle. The most likely outcome is Mayweather by stoppage (at 8/13) in what could be under 9.5 rounds (at 4/9), a time frame backed up by a Fight Minutes spread of 20.25-21.75. So, what exactly does McGregor have on his side? Well, he is far younger than Mayweather, 29 years old to the American’s 40, and is around an inch taller than his opponent. In theory he also shouldn’t have the rust on him that Mayweather might have – the Pretty Boy hasn’t been in the ring professionally since September 2015. It’s likely none of that will matter, however, given the sheer, almost unimaginable gulf in boxing experience between the two men.
