With Spurs potentially fatally weakened, can Chelsea overturn their 1st leg deficit and reach the EFL Cup final? 2019 hasn’t done much for the Blues, the club trying, and so far failing, to get back the consistency that defined the first few months of Maurizio Sarri’s debut season in England. The year opened with a goalless draw against Southampton, and while they beat the relegation-battling Newcastle in a fixture that was closer than it should’ve been, last weekend they suffered a 2-0 flop at Arsenal.
Obviously in amongst all that came their Carabao Cup semi-final 1st leg, a game they lost 1-0 thanks to a 26th minute penalty from Harry Kane. In a horrible bit of mis/fortune, dependant on what part of London you come from, the England ace is out until March with an ankle injury. Combine that with the similarly hurt Dele Alli, also out for the next couple of months, and Tottenham are facing a key run – that includes a visit from Borussia Dortmund – without their biggest players. With Son Heuing-min on international duty in the Asia Cup, that leaves Fernando Llorente as Spurs’ best shot up front, despite the Spaniard scoring just 4 times this season. He heads into Thursday night at a Super Mega PGM of 14-18, followed by 20-year old Kazaiah Sterling at 13-17, and Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela both at 10-14. As for Chelsea, their latest signing, Gonaalo Higuain, isn’t available for the 2nd leg clash due to the loan being completed after Wednesday’s midday deadlines. That leaves top scorer Eden Hazard with a Super Mega PGM of 36-42, not that far ahead of Olivier Giroud’s 30-36 despite the former more than doubling the latter’s tally this season. Though they’ve lost twice to their Thursday visitors in 2018/19, Spurs’ injury issues appear to give Sarri’s side the edge, with Spreadex offering a Chelsea/Tottenham Goal Supremacy spread of 0.85-1.05.
