Can Gareth Southgate keep up England’s unbeaten run in the World Cup qualifying alive when they host Lithuania on Sunday, at 5pm on ITV? Though England’s trip to Dortmund ended in defeat, there were plenty of positives, including a spirited full debut from Michael Keane, a relatively successful adaption to playing with 3 at the back and the continued development of Dele Alli. The fact that it was also a team without the likes of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge is an extra boost to Southgate; though, of course, he shouldn’t make a habit out of impressive losses. As for England’s actual qualifying campaign, they sit 2 points clear at the top of Group F without ever really impressing. Things kicked off with the first and only game in charge for a disgraced Big Sam, a 95th-minute goal resulting in a 1-0 victory in Slovakia. Southgate then took over for the milquetoast 2-0 win against Malta, a flaccid 0-0 draw in Slovenia and a promising 3-0 defeat of Scotland (that admittedly was better on paper than in practice). Though one imagines Sunday’s opponents, whose only qualifying win so far has come against Malta, will pose far less of a threat than Germany did on Wednesday, Lithuania won’t be a soft touch. They managed to draw against both Slovenia and Scotland, and were unlucky not to win given that the equalisers in those games came in the 93rd and 89th minutes respectively. At the same time they did get hammered 4-0 when they travelled to Slovakia, so as long as England find a bit more urgency up front Southgate shouldn’t have too much to worry about, with Spreadex offering an England/Lithuania Goal Supremacy spread of 2.5-2.7 alongside a Total Goals spread of 3.25-3.45.
