Will Charlton sucker punch Sunderland and clamber back into the Championship this Sunday, at 3pm on Sky Sports Football? Though they only finished 3 points outside the top 2, it took the Addicks until the final weekend of the season to reach 3rd place, sat ahead of Portsmouth thanks to a marginally superior goal difference.
This meant they took on Doncaster – who were a whole 12 points behind the Black Cats in 6th place – in the play-off semi-finals, on paper the easiest fixture available. And yet they very nearly messed it all up. In the 1st leg Charlton led 2-0 for the best part of an hour, only to let the Rovers back into the tie with an 87th minute goal from Matthew Blair. At the Valley Lee Bowyer’s lot scored in the 2nd minute, but Doncaster equalised less than 10 minutes later. And then, just before the final whistle, Andrew Butler sent the game to extra time. Goals in the 100th and 101st minutes left the fixture all square, resulting in a penalty shootout and eventual 4-3 victory for Charlton. In comparison, Sunderland’s journey to Wembley was pretty damn dull. Coming off a run-in that saw them pick up 1 win in their final 7 games, the Black Cats beat Portsmouth 1-0 at home before drawing 0-0 at Fratton Park, their semi-final being almost the polar opposite of what Charlton and Doncaster produced. With 25 goals in all competitions, Lyle Taylor heads to the home of football with a Super Mega PGM of 27-32, ahead of Sunderland’s Charlie Wyke, at 20-24. Yet the Black Cats are just about fancied to return to the Championship on the first time of asking, with Spreadex offering a Sunderland/Charlton Goal Supremacy spread of 0.05-0.25, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.4-2.6.
