Can Real Madrid bash Bayern Munich when they travel to Germany for their Champions League semi-final, at 7.45pm on BT Sport 2? By their own lofty standards Real have had a bitterly disappointing domestic season. They are 15 points behind likely La Liga victors Barcelona, and were shockingly dumped out of the Copa del Rey by Leganes in the quarter-finals. And yet Real remain European experts, aiming to become the first team in 20 years to reach 3 consecutive Champions League finals. And they haven’t had it easy. Their inability to beat Tottenham in the group stages like them facing stiff competition in the last 16 against one of the tournament favourites PSG. Yet despite going 1-0 down within the first half an hour of the home leg, Real were never really in trouble, eventually beating France’s runaway champs 5-2 on aggregate. Out of the frying pan and into the fire, Real Madrid then had a replay of last season’s final against Juventus. A dominant trip to Italy, where the Spaniards walked away with a 3-0 victory, almost came undone at the Bernabeu. Juve were up 3-0 with mere moments left to go it looked like the fixture was going to extra-time, only for Cristiano Ronaldo to break Turinese hearts with a 98th minute penalty. Ronaldo has been essential to Real’s European campaign. He has scored in every game this season, racking up 15 goals in just 10 appearances. That tally leaves him 2 goals shy of the record set in 2013/14, and at a Super Mega PGM of 50-58 it’s well within the realms of possibility that he could end 2017/18 setting a new high watermark for forwards in the Champions League. Now, none of this is to say that Bayern should be quaking in their boots. The Germans secured a 6th consecutive Bundesliga title with room to spare – they are a hefty 22 points ahead of Schalke in 2nd with 5 games to go – and have no point looked truly worried in Europe. While a 3-0 loss to PSG meant they finished 2nd in Group B, they were nevertheless dealt a kind hand in Besiktas being their last 16 opponent. Bayern absolutely battered the Turkish side, romping their way to an 8-1 aggregate win. They weren’t quite so rampant against Sevilla, though a 2-1 victory over the Europa League specialists is no mean feat, especially given that the Spaniards had knocked out Man United in the previous round. Bayern also have their own crack squad up front. Robert Lewandowski – who has 39 goals in all competitions (admittedly only 5 of those were in Europe) – sits at a Super Mega PGM of 60-70, with Sandro Wagner at 37-43 and Thomas Muller at 18-22. Though Wednesday’s visitors have proven more than adept at seeing off Europe’s big hitters, the hosts are no slouches either, with Spreadex offering a Bayern Munich/Real Madrid Goal Supremacy spread of 0.35-0.55 alongside a Total Goals spread of 3.25-3.45 and a Bookings spread of 48-52.
