After a thriller in Hockenheim the F1 league table’s been transformed – but who’ll be on top the other side of Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix? Sebastian Vettel looked all set to cruise to his 5th victory of the season and extend his points lead last weekend, while Lewis Hamilton was stuck in 4th after starting from 14th following a hydraulic failure in qualifying. Yet then the heavens opened, with the rain – an alien concept in the UK – causing Vettel to crash out on lap 52 at the Sachs Kurve hairpin. To make matters worse, Hamilton managed to zoom into 1st place after the restart, eventually securing his 4th Grand Prix win in 2018. That, combined with Vettel’s retirement, saw the Brit jump back to the top of the table, opening up a 17 point gap between him and his German rival. Interestingly, that hasn’t massively increased Hamilton’s Outright Index spread. The defending champion sits at 49-52, only a smidge ahead of Vettel’s 46-49, though in terms of fixed odds there’s a larger difference, with Hamilton at 8/13 to the Ferrari ace’s 5/4. Looking at the spreads for Sunday’s trip to the Hungaroring, however, and Vettel’s hopes of a 6th title are far from over. Though Hamilton might be the most successful driver in the history of the Hungarian Grand Prix, with 5 wins to his name, Vettel has been victorious in 2 of the last 3 years. That leaves the German with a Race Index spread of 60-65, a notable chunk higher than Hamilton’s 54-59. The Brit actually shares that spread with Dutch upstart Max Verstappen, who’s aiming for a 2nd Grand Prix win this season after his Austrian triumph at the start of the month. Knocking on the door of a podium finish is Daniel Ricciardo, the only other driver to have multiple victories this season, at a spread of 51-56. It’s quite a drop outside that top 4, with the Finnish pair of Kimi Raikkonen Valterri Bottas, who are 3rd and 4th respectively, both at a Race Index spread of 36-40.
