Can Swansea beat Sheffield Wednesday to ensure their stuttering journey through the FA Cup continues? It had to end at some point. Since January 2nd the Swans hadn’t lost a game in all competitions, a run that included visits from Liverpool, Arsenal and an over-performing Burnley, alongside a trip to Leicester. Yet Saturday saw that run come to a close in somewhat surprising fashion, with Carlos Carvalhal – who has done quite the turnaround job at the Liberty Stadium – and his men suffering a hefty 4-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton. That loss sent Swansea back into the relegation zone, if only thanks to a worse goal difference than Crystal Palace and Southampton, after a fortnight out of the red. As for the FA Cup, to say the Swans’ progress has been laboured is an understatement. Tuesday’s game is the third replay in as many rounds, the Welsh club falling into a pattern of drawing on road before roaring back at home (they smashed Notts County 8-1 at the start of the month, in a rare sign of finishing prowess from a side that currently has the Premier League’s duffest strike force). Sheffield Wednesday – who were actually managed by Carvalhal until Christmas Eve – held Swansea to a 0-0 draw at Hillsborough, a result that followed a 2-0 3rd replay win over Carlisle and a 3-1 4th round romp against Reading. The FA Cup remains Wednesday’s best chance of doing something memorable this season – if they exit now, all they’ll likely be left with is a bottom half of the Championship finish lacking even the drama of a relegation scrap. Though their confidence may be shaken after Saturday’s hammering, the hosts have won their last 5 home games on the trot, and sit at a Swansea/Sheffield Wednesday Goal Supremacy spread of 0.8-1 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.25-2.45.
