Will it be a Stamford Bridge swansong for Maurizio Sarri when Chelsea host Tottenham at 8pm on BT Sport 1? The Italian manager isn’t having a great time of it in 2019. Sunday’s EFL Cup final penalties defeat may have been a far better result than the last time the Blues took on Man City – a 6-0 drubbing that’ll take a while to be forgotten – but it was a defeat nonetheless, making it 6 high profile losses in Chelsea’s last 12 games.
Speculation was already mounting that Sarri’s time at the club is coming to an end before the weekend; doubly so now that another chance to pick up some silverware has slipped through his fingers (all this is without even mentioning the Kepa Arrizabalaga fiasco). And given defeat on Wednesday would do serious damage to Chelsea’s top 4 push – they are in 6th place, 3 points behind Arsenal in 4th having played one game fewer – the manager best have a bag packed just in case. As for Tottenham, they are looking to keep up their stealthy, dark horse attempt at sneaking their way to the title. Currently 6 points off Liverpool and 5 adrift of City, it would admittedly take a downturn from the frontrunners for Spurs to muscle their way to the top spot. They’d have been in a far better position if they hadn’t ballsed up against Burnley last Saturday, a late winner from Ashley Barnes gifting the Clarets all 3 points. With 21 goals in all competitions Harry Kane is clearly the hot pick going forward, sitting at a Super Mega PGM of 36-42 to teammate Son Heung-Min’s 21-26. The Blues, meanwhile, remain reliant on Eden Hazard, who shares a spread of 30-36 with January loanee Gonzalo Higuain. Despite their New Year nightmare, the hosts shouldn’t be counted out just yet, with Spreadex offering a Chelsea/Tottenham Goal Supremacy spread of 0.1-0.3 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.65-2.85.
