Can the Republic of Ireland avoid an England-style embarrassment when they host Iceland at 7.45pm on Premier Sports? One imagines Martin O’Neill and co. were unsure quite what to make of Ireland’s 0-0 draw against Wales on Friday night. Taking a point off of Chris Coleman’s Euro 2016 semi-finalists, preventing Gareth Bale from scoring and maintaining a 4 point gap between the 2 sides are undoubtedly all positives. However, that draw saw Ireland slip into 2nd place in Group D behind Serbia, and there are questions to be asked of the fact that they failed to score despite Wales playing the final 20 minutes with 10 men. Not to mention the nightmare tackle that left captain Seamus Coleman with a broken leg. So, a mixed bag. Yet they will still fancy themselves to travel to Russia next year, especially if they can beat Serbia when the 2 sides meet at the Aviva Stadium in September. Iceland actually find themselves in a similar situation to the Irish. After their incredible Euro 2016 they are minnows no more, and will be bitterly disappointed if they don’t reach their first ever World Cup in 2018. They are currently in 2nd place in Group I, 3 points behind Croatia (so far the only side they have lost to in qualifying) and 2 ahead of Ukraine and Turkey (who Iceland drew against and beat respectively). Most recently Iceland travelled to Albania to take on Kosovo, with first half goals from Bjorn Bergmann Sigurdarson and Gylfi Sigardsson giving Heimir Hallgrimsson another 3 points. Though he would be unwise to underestimate their visitors, O’Neil will be hoping for a routine win on Tuesday night, with Spreadex offering an Ireland/Iceland Goal Supremacy spread of 0.3-0.5 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.05-2.25.
