Can Rangers kick-off their Europa League qualification campaign with a win against the mighty Progres Niederkorn? The Gers aren’t exactly back where they were before their financial collapse. Though they finished 3rd in the Scottish Premiership on their first season back in the top flight, a ridiculous 39 points sat between them and champions Celtic (not to mention the 9 that separated them and runners-up Aberdeen). That’s not exactly the best prep for a Europa League run – however, there is A LOT of dross at this stage of Europa League qualifying, and the Scots will be mortified if they don’t at least make it to the 2nd round. And though that may sound like a cruel assessment of Progres Niederkorn, a side that came 4th in the Luxembourg National Division sounds more like a punchline to a naff footballing joke then real opposition. Not only did they finish in 4th, they were 12 points away from 3rd place and 21 points adrift of the top 2 (who were only separated by goal difference). Rangers have been on a bit of a Portuguese spending spree this summer, buying Fabio Cardoso, Daniel Candeias and Bruno Alves (the latter has been at the Confederations Cup in Russia, so won’t be making an appearance on Thursday night). They’ve also nabbed a pair of Mexicans, forward Eduardo Herrera and midfielder Carlos Pena, a Colombian striker called Alfredo Morelos and, most controversially, former Dons captain Ryan Jack. Anything but a big win will be an embarrassment for Pedo Caixinha’s side. Luckily for them it doesn’t look like the Luxembourgers will put up too much of a fight, with Spreadex offering a chunky Rangers/Progres Niederkorn Goal Supremacy of 2.95-3.15 alongside a promising Total Goals spread of 4-4.3.
