Will Tyson Fury’s jab be a good as his jabber when he fights Deontay Wilder in the Staples Center this Saturday? Attempting to nab his first bit of gold since he relinquished the WBA (United), WBO and IBO heavyweight titles back in 2016, Fury has so far protected his unbeaten run with a pair of carefully selected bouts against the 39-year old Sefer Seferi and 34-year old Francesco Pianeta. The former was forced to retire in the 4th round, while the latter took the Gypsy King the distance, a result Fury insists was by design, claiming he ‘needed the rounds’ and had ‘plenty left in the tank’ at the fight’s close. Wilder has been equally careful in who he has chosen to fight in 2018. His solitary bout came against Luis Ortiz in March, an opponent picked by the American’s camp for his perceived similarities to Fury. The Bronze Bomber was taken to his limits by Ortiz, with the referee very nearly calling off the fight in the 7th round, only for Wilder to rally in the 9th and 10th rounds, eventually securing the 39th knockout of his career and his 40th consecutive victory. Lacking the rust that Fury still exhibits, the defending WBC heavyweight champion somewhat unsurprisingly is the favourite to leave Los Angeles with his unbeaten record intact. Spreadex are offering a Deontay Wilder/Tyson Fury 10-3 spread of 7-10 – where the winner receives 10 points plus a further 3 for every round remaining in the fight – alongside a Fight Minutes spread of 25.5-27. As for the binary markets – which make up to 100 if the name fight is victorious and 0 if not – Wilder is at 54.5-62 to win, against Fury’s 36.3-43.5. And what about the specifics of the outcome? Well, the most likely option appears to be Wilder by Stoppage in rounds 1-12, which is a 21/20 fixed odds eventuality, with Wilder by Decision after 12 rounds at 9/2. Fury by Stoppage is then at 13/2, while a Decision victory for the Manc mischief maker is at 2/1.
