Sports Blog 03/12/2014: Match Preview - Arsenal v Southampton, Wednesday 3rd December

Despite being in better form than Arsenal, and having beat them 2-1 in the League Cup earlier this season, Ronald Koeman’s team will be wary of the Gunners, who are still riding high after beating Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last week. Arsenal followed this up with a 1-0 against West Brom, and will be looking for revenge for the League Cup defeat when the Saint’s come visiting later tonight.

The West Brom games was also the first time Arsene Wenger was able to start Sanchez, Giroud and Welbeck together, giving Arsenal an increased presence upfront. Sanchez in particular has been in fine form, scoring the second against Dortmund, and totalling 8 goals and 2 assists out of Arsenal’s 21 league goals this season.

As mentioned, the Arsenal game is the latest in an intimidating string of fixtures for the Saints, which sees them also play Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea before the year’s out, with Arsenal and United their first games of the new year. Last year Southampton were similarly riding high before a tricky run of fixtures saw them eventually finish 8th at the season’s close. The Saints’ have also failed to take a point off of any of the teams that finished higher than them last season, something they will be desperately trying to rectify tonight.

Southampton Tough Run Of Fixtures

Before the game tonight Spreadex has seen an explosion of bets on Arsenal Supremacy at a spread of Arsenal/Southampton 0.65-0.85, with Alexis Sanchez an unsurprising 4/1 fixed odds favourite to score first. And after opening the scoring against Dortmund last Wednesday, Yaya Sanogo is an outside bet to score first at 13/2 fixed odds. In this battle of upstarts vs the establishment, Southampton will be hoping to put to bed their weekend defeat and refresh their top four push, whilst Wenger will be hoping to quell rumours of his exit with a strong win against this season’s biggest surprise.
