Can England avoid another abject humiliation when they host Pakistan in their 2nd test, starting on Friday? Miserable doesn’t really do justice to England’s Test form of late. Under captain Joe Root they failed to pick up a single victory in 7 Tests in Australia and New Zealand, a rubbish run that put a fair amount of pressure on the May’s visit from the Shaheens. The fact, then, that England had collapsed to a 9 wicket defeat at Lord’s by the 4th day was both a bitter disappointment and, currently, par for the course. It was also the first time England have lost an opening summer Test in 23 years, a feat that one imagines Root would like to sweep under his more illustrious records. And it’s not like Root and co. have much time to get revenge. June’s meeting at Headingley is the final stop of Pakistan’s tour, leaving Sarfraz Ahmed’s men with a very good chance of sealing their first series win on English soil for more than 2 decades. Despite the failings under his leadership, Root still leads in terms of Spreadex’s Player Super Mega Runs spreads, at 145-155 to Alastair Cook’s 108-118 and Jonny Bairstow’s 102-122. As for Pakistan, there’s not much to call between Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq, who sit at spreads of 95-105 and 94-102 respectively. In terms of whether or not the hosts can bounce back as summer gets underway, they are odds on favourites to take the 2nd Test, at 4/7 to Pakistan’s 3/1. As for the spreads, England sit at a 25:10 spread of 16.1-17.6 to Pakistan’s 6.6-81, and are at 57.8-63.7 to win the Test against the visitors’ 20-25.
