Can Frank Lampard continue a successful, unlikely EFL Cup trip down memory lane when Derby travel to Chelsea, at 7.45pm on Sky Sports Football? The ex-England international is having a good old go at this managing lark. In his first season at the helm, the Rams are well within the mix for promotion to the Premier League. They’re at the bottom end of the Championship play-off zone on 25 points, only 4 adrift from Sheffield United in the top spot (and just 2 off of Leeds in 2nd place). But Lampard’s biggest coup has come in the Carabao Cup. A 2-0 1st round win at Oldham wasn’t necessarily a shock; nor a 4-0 victory at Hull. The 3rd round’s trip to Old Trafford, however, was a different matter entirely. Going toe to toe with his former boss Jose Mourinho, Lampard’s Derby came away with a penalties triumph, winning the shoot-out 8-7 having held United to a 2-2 draw during normal time. And they could well have won it without all that drama, the faltering Manchester side only equalising in the 5th minute of added time. Of course, a troubled United is a different challenge to a Chelsea side that haven’t lost a game since their pre-season Community Shield disappointment. In terms of their EFL Cup form specifically, the Blues managed to end Liverpool’s own unbeaten streak in the 3rd round, coming away from Anfield with a 2-1 win thanks to a late blinder from Eden Hazard. The Belgian ace likely won’t make an appearance on Wednesday, however, due to a back injury; nor will Pedro or Olivier Giroud. That leaves Alvaro Morata – who scored just his 4th goal of the season last weekend – as their best shot at a Super Mega PGM of 54-62, with Willian at 28-34 and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who nabbed a hat-trick against BATE Borisov in the Europa League, at 22-27. Though there’s every chance Lampard can claim another nostalgic scalp, the Rams face an uphill battle, with Spreadex offering a Chelsea/Derby Goal Supremacy spread of 1.75-1.95 alongside a Total Goals spread of 3.1-3.3.
