Andrew Mount's Racing Tips

It’s day two of York’s Ebor meeting where Andrew has four recommended bets/trades across three races on Thursday, August 24th.

YORK 3.00

Last year, David O’Meara saddled the winner, runner-up and fourth in this 1m Heritage Handicap and ORBAAN, fourth 12 months ago, could prove best of his quartet of runners this time around. The eight-year-old runs off a 5lb lower mark and often comes good at this time of year when he’s had a recent outing, recording form figures in July-August, when returned to the track within 14 days, of 17011429 (3-8) for a profit of £43.33 to a £1 level stake at SP. He met trouble in running at a crucial stage last year and the race should be run to suit his patient style. Buy in the Spreadex 50-30-20-10 market or back him each-way.

Recommendation: Back ORBAAN in York 3.00

YORK 3.35

Three-year-olds have dominated the Yorkshire Oaks in recent years, with seven of the last nine winners coming from this age group. Only the brilliant Alpinista (last year) and Enable (2017) prevented a clean sweep for the classic generation in that period and the sole three-year-old to take on Enable was a 100-1 shot. NOVAKAI has improved as stepped up in trip and Karl Burke’s daughter of Lope De Vega hacked up in a fast time in Listed company on her most recent outing. That was her first run over today’s 1m4f trip and she could have further improvement to come. She’s my main fancy in the race but rather than back her individually I want to keep the other three-year-olds on side by buying DOUBLE NUMBER OF WINNER with Spreadex (the three-year-old quartet are numbered 7, 8, 9 and 10 on the racecard).

Recommendation: Buy DOUBLE NUMBER OF WINNER in York 3.35

YORK 4.10

The Listed Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes has been another good race for three-year-olds, with nine of the last ten winners coming from this age group. There are two interesting ones at big prices – BRIGHT DIAMOND and LMAY – and I want to back them both. The former has some useful speed figures on fast ground and finished a respectable 50-1 fifth in the Oaks before failing to cope with Newcastle’s Tapeta surface and first-time headgear (left off today), while Lmay settled better in the first-time hood (retained) when fourth to Yorkshire Oaks hope Novakai at Newmarket. Buy in the pair in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or back them each-way.

Recommendation: Back BRIGHT DIAMOND & LMAY in York 4.10
