Six Nations Betting Preview

betting-preview-010223-landing-page-header

After a French Grand Slam in 2022, the four British and Irish nations are out for revenge in 2023 (Italy are as well, but the 750/1 outright shots will have their work cut out not finishing bottom of the pile let alone winning the thing). There are new head coaches in at England and Wales with Steve Borthwick coming in at the former and Warren Gatland returning to the latter as well as exciting talents Jamie Osborne, Daffyd Jenkins, Christ Tshiunza, and Ollie Hassell-Collins all hoping to leave their mark on the tournament.

With the competition just days away, we take a look through the Six Nations betting odds and assess the chances of the runners and riders.

Please remember that when spread betting, losses can exceed deposits.

ENGLAND SIX NATIONS BETTING ODDS

Starting with England, Borthwick’s boys are 4/1 third favourites to land their first title since 2020, but they have tough trips to Dublin and Cardiff in their schedule. A sprinkling of younger talent and a move to a smaller, speedier side may produce more exciting rugby but will it produce results?

In the spread markets, England’s Total Points is priced at 682-698 whilst their Total Tries spread is 14.25-15.25. You can also play the England Wins x 10 Spread at 28-31.

IRELAND SIX NATIONS PREVIEW

Seen as the best side in the competition, Ireland are priced at a shade of odds against to make it two titles in six years at 5/4. They have an excellent squad and one of the greatest minds in the sport in charge as Andy Farrell looks to add another trophy to his CV.

The number one ranked side in the world have a Total Points spread of 135-140, and they start their campaign away against Wales before trips to Rome and Edinburgh are bookended by home ties with France and England.

CAN SCOTLAND FLOWER AFTER A FRUSTRATING 2022?

It was a case of ‘what if’ in 2022 for Scotland as success at Twickenham was followed by a narrow defeat in Cardiff. They lost against Australia by a point after missing a last minute penalty and despite leading until the 65th minute, they were beaten once again by New Zealand at Murrayfield.

As ever, hopes are high that the Scots can get some scalps this year, but they are 18/1 to land the title and the outsiders are unlikely to be in the mix come week five. One market which may provide some interest comes in the spreads with Scotland Wins x10 priced at 20-23.

FRANCE SIX NATIONS ODDS

2022 was an exceptional year for the team from across the Channel with a Grand Slam, an unbeaten tour of Japan and a clean sweep in the Autumn Nations Series all in the bag. They come into this Six Nations as 15/8 second favourites to land the title but they have quite a few of their star men missing through injury and their depleted squad depth may come back to haunt them as the weeks progress.

The France Performance market could be an interesting angle ahead of this one with the spread at 310-340. Here, one point is awarded per point scored, five for every try, 25 for every win, and there is a 75 point bonus for completing the Grand Slam.

GATLAND BACK FOR MORE IN CARDIFF

Having won four Six Nations in his last spell in charge of the Principality (three of which were Grand Slams) Kiwi coach Warren Gatland is hoping to repeat the trick this time around. The Hamilton native will have his work cut out this time around with the Welsh at 14/1 to taste success in 2023.

In the spread betting markets, Wales Total Points is 99-104 whilst Welsh hearts may well rest on Josh Adams, with the Swansea flyer’s Total Tournament Try Minutes at 100-110.

ITALY SIX NATIONS BETTING ODDS

An outright price of 750/1 tells you all you need to know about the Italians with the Azzurri 1/8 to pick up yet another Wooden Spoon. There isn’t much hope for Kieran Crowley’s side, but they were able to get a maiden victory over Australia last term. Winning just one match will constitute a success for the men from Rome.

There are some spread markets which could provide long term interest surrounding the Italians however, with Total Italy Points at 77-81. The Opposition/Italy Supremacy line is 99-105 (basically the margin of victory in Italy games summed up across the tournament), with buyers in the money if the Italians lose by a combined score of 106 or more.

SIX NATIONS TOP TRYSCORER BETTING ODDS

French flyer Damien Penaud and Ireland’s James Lowe shared the Top Tryscorer award last year (alongside Gabin Villiere) and the two head the betting this year with Penaud at 6/1 and Lowe 7/1. Josh Adams and Duhan van der Merwe come next at 10/1 with England’s best chance seemingly Hassell-Collins at 25/1.

There are plenty of options priced up and if you fancy an outsider then we are paying 1/4 the odds on four places.

SIX NATIONS GRAND SLAM BETTING

Three of the last five Six Nations have seen a side complete the Grand Slam with France 4/1 to repeat their success from last year. Ireland seemingly have the best chance of completing the feat and are 5/2 with England at 9/1. No side to land the Grand Slam can be backed at even money.

In the Triple Crown betting market, Ireland are again favourites at 5/4, with England 4/1, Wales 9/1, and Scotland 14/1. No side to win the Triple Crown, something that last happened in 2017, is available at 15/8.
