FOOTBALL

England should claim their place in next year’s Qatar World Cup this weekend, although it’s likely they’ll have to wait until Monday for confirmation. Gareth Southgate’s team face Albania tonight and San Marino on Monday needing four points to seal automatic qualification, and even with their recent wobbles, that shouldn’t pose too many problems.

After winning their first five qualifiers, Gareth Southgate’s team have stuttered of late, with two draws in their last three games, but they’re 1/10 to beat Albania and big odds on to top the group. Harry Kane is 23/10 favourite to get the first goal, despite him blanking last time out, when England drew 1-1 draw with Hungary. That was the first qualifier the England skipper had failed to score in since September 2017, a run of 15 consecutive games.

Kane scored one and set up the other when England won 2-0 in Albania in March. A repeat of that scoreline is 4/1 favourite for the correct score tonight, while the England skipper has been boosted to 29/10 to score 2+ goals.
On the spreads, the Total Goals is set at 2.9-3.1, with Total Goal Minutes 149-159. If you fancy Albania to make a fight of it, Southampton’s Chelsea loanee Armando Broja, who has scored in three of Albania’s last four games, has been boosted to 8/1 to score anytime.

Scotland are 1/5 to win in Moldova this evening and clinch a World Cup play-off place. Lyndon Dykes scored the only goal of the game at Hampden Park in September, a feat he repeated in the last game against the Faroe Islands, when he became the first Scotsman to score in four consecutive games since 1969.

However, with the QPR hitman suspended, the likes of Che Adams, boosted to 11/10 to score anytime, will need to step up. A repeat of that 1-0 scoreline tonight is 19/4.

Wales’s World Cup play-off spot was guaranteed last night by Spain’s 1-0 win over Greece.
Even if Rob Page’s team don’t finish in the top two, their Nations League performance means they have a play-off spot sown up, so can now go all out to win their games against Belarus and Belgium and hope other results go their way to allow them to top the group.

Wales are 2/11 to beat Belarus on Saturday, but they need 40/1 Estonia to beat Belgium to have a chance of automatic qualification.

HORSE RACING

There’s three days of top-class racing action at Cheltenham starting today in their traditional November meeting.
The big race of the weekend is Saturday’s Gold Cup, where Coole Cody will attempt to become just the sixth horse – and first for 20 years – to win this race twice.

Lalor, trained by Paul Nicholls, and Dan Skelton’s Protektorat are the favourite in the field of 20 at 6/1 with Coole Cody 14/1 to repeat last year’s success.

Of the outsiders, JP McManus’s Dostal Phil, a 16/1 chance, looks interesting. His jumping can be suspect but if he can hold it together, he could be in the frame.

RUGBY UNION

Rugby’s Autumn internationals continue with England playing Australia, Scotland against world champions South Africa, Ireland facing the All Blacks and Wales tackling Fiji. England may be a side in transition, but they’re still 2/15 to beat the Aussies, who went down 15-13 at Murrayfield against Scotland last weekend. It’s 5/6 each of two with Australia given a 13.5 point headstart.

The England/Australia spread, measuring the points difference, is 13-16, while the England/Australia Performance Superiority, which awards 25 points for a win, 10 for a draw, 10 for a try, 5 per kick and 10 for the last try, with -5 per missed kick, -5 for a yellow card and -10 for a red, is set at 48-57.

Scotland, fresh off that Australia win, are 13/8 to follow it up by beating the world champs, with South Africa 8/15. Ireland are 14/5 to beat the 1/4 All Blacks, while Wales are 2/11 to beat Fiji, who you can back at 4/1.
