Our Race Index horse racing spread bets are a fascinating alternative to fixed odds ‘To Win’, ‘Place’ or ‘Each Way’ bets.

Horses are given a spread based on 50 points for finishing first, 25 for finishing second, 10 for finishing third or 0 for finishing fourth or lower (50-30-20-10 index for races with 12 runners or more).

Therefore you can often still turn a profit if you back a favourite who finishes second rather than winning, or an outsider who finishes third (or fourth on the 50-30-20-10 index).

It’s also a great if you want to bet against a favourite; simply sell on the Race Index price.

With spread betting, the more right you are the more you can win. But remember that losses can also exceed your deposit should you get the bet wrong.

4. Once 5 x £1 horse racing Race Index spread bets have been placed and settled, you will have net losses from the 5 bets refunded
5. Any Race Index spread bets of £1 or less within the period will qualify for the promotion. The first five bets of £1 or less will qualify to work out the net loss.
