With the superlative seasons of both Man City and Liverpool driving the title race to the very final weekend, it’s been a fantastic season of Premier League football. But what exactly were the best spread bets of 2018/19? Find out below!
Remember that unlike fixed odds betting you can lose more than your initial stake when placing sports spread bets so it is always wise to work out your worst-case scenario when choosing your stake size.
10. WEST HAM V BURNLEY
Date: 03/11/2018 Market: Total Goal Minutes Spread: 136 – 146Make-up: 374Potential profit x stake: 228 x initial stake
A few times this season West Ham left it to the last minute to secure all 3 points; one such fixture was their November win over fellow clarets Burnley. Late strikes from Felipe Anderson and Javier Hernandez broke the 2-2 deadlock, and helped produce a Total Goal Minutes make-up of 374.
9. Liverpool v Crystal Palace
Date: 19/01/2019 Market: Goals Cubed Spread: 70 – 81Make-up: 343Profit x stake: 263 x initial stake
Perhaps still shaken by their loss at Man City a fortnight previous – a result that proved to be the deciding factor this season – Liverpool made a meal of what, on paper, should have been a routine visit from Crystal Palace. Eventually the Reds won the fixture 4-3, leading to a tasty Goals Cubed make-up of 343.
8. Manchester City v Cardiff
Date: 03/04/2019 Market: Corners Squared Spread: 131 – 143 Make-up: 441Potential profit x stake: 298 x initial stake
They may have only beaten Cardiff 2-0, but Man City were constantly on the attack at the start of April, their 79% possession leading to 17 corners. Add on the Welsh side’s comparatively meagre 4 corners, square that 21 total, and you get a Corners Squared make-up of 441.
7. Newcastle v Wolves
Date: 09/12/2018 Market: Total Card Minutes Spread: 217 – 247Make-up: 546 Profit x stake: 299 x initial stake
A fighty little fixture between Newcastle and Wolves saw a lot of cards handed out – 8 overall – with a big ol’ cluster of them coming in the final 30 minutes. That only served to ramp up the Total Card Minutes, which eventually added up to a sizeable 546.
6. Tottenham v Huddersfield
Date: 13/04/2019 Market: Lucas SMM (minutes are doubled for 2nd goal and trebled for 3rd)Spread: 39 – 45Make-up: 471 Profit x stake: 426 x initial stake
Though his Champions League final-securing hat-trick against Ajax was perhaps a bit more notable, 3 and a half weeks earlier Lucas Moura actually nabbed a slightly more profitable trio against Huddersfield. Goals in 27’, 87’ and 90+3’ left the Brazilian with a Super Mega Goal Minutes make-up of 471.
5. West Ham v Huddersfield
Date: 16/03/2019Market: West Ham Headed SMM (minutes are doubled for 2nd headed goal and trebled for 3rd) Spread: 23 – 28 Make-up: 513Profit x stake: 485 x initial stake
Down 3-1 with just 15 minutes to go, West Ham had to keep their heads to prevent a shock loss to Huddersfield. Well, not only keep it, but use it: a header from Angelo Ogbonna in the 75th minute started the comeback, before a noggin-double from Javier Hernandez – one in the 84th minute, one in injury time – secured a 4-3 turnaround. That resulted in a hefty West Ham Headed Super Mega Goal Minutes make-up of 75 + (84 x 2) + (90 x 3), i.e. 513.
4. Everton v Tottenham
Date: 23/12/2019 Market: Goals x Shirts (Total Goals x Total Shirt Numbers) Spread: 176 – 185 Make-up: 784Profit x stake: 599 x initial stake
In one of Tottenham’s biggest performances of the season, they chewed up the Toffees and spat them out at Goodison Park just before Christmas, winning 6-2. Multiply those 8 goals by the total shirt numbers of all the scorers – so that’s 2 x no. 7 Son Heung-Min, 2 x no. 10 Harry Kane, no. 20 Dele Alli, no. 23 Christian Eriksen, no. 11 Theo Walcott and no. 10 Gylfi Siggurdsson – and you get a make-up of 784.
3. Arsenal vs Huddersfield
Date: 08/12/2018Market: Cross Bookings (Team A Bookings x Team B Bookings) Spread: 230 – 290 Make-up: 2,000 Profit x stake: 1,710 x initial stake
Though no-one actually got sent off when the Terriers travelled to the Emirates Stadium in December, a steady stream of yellow cards for both teams – especially in the first half – lead to a sizeable Cross Bookings make-up of 2,000.
2. Bournemouth v Tottenham
Date: 04/05/2019Market: Multi Bookings (1st half Bookings Points x 2nd half Bookings Points)Spread: 225 – 295Make-up: 3,025 Profit x stake: 2,730 x initial stake
Tottenham’s Premier League season began to unravel in late-February, and perhaps reached its fractious nadir in early-May, when they lost 1-0 to Bournemouth. Red cards for Son Heung-min and Juan Foyth either side of the break, alongside yellow cards for Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld, Moussa Sissoko, Victor Wanyama and Dele Alli saw the club almost single-handedly contribute to a massive Multi-Bookings make-up of 3,025. The Cherries only saw one card, a late yellow for Jefferson Lerma.
